Saffafa” is one of the traditional crafts widespread in the United Arab Emirates, passed down through generations and mastered by women living in areas where palm trees are abundant.
What are the Emirati Saffafa products?
They are diverse products made from palm fronds, such as round and deep baskets of various sizes used for storing clothes and transporting dates.
The “Majba” or “Makba” is a triangular or conical shape with a wide base and a tapered top, used to cover food to protect it from insects or dust.
Emirati Saffafa products come in various forms, including large “Mazma” for carrying items, various-sized “Qaffa,” which are smaller than the Mazma, “Suroud” used for serving food, and “Majba” in which bread can be placed as it is closed with a lid made from palm fronds.
Saffafa craft also includes “Mahafat,” which are handheld fans, mats, and innovative creations like colorful women’s bags that are in high demand.
As a result, the Saffafa craft has managed to survive, as it remains popular and is part of a consumption cycle that helps preserve it from disappearing.
